Madeline Lumpkin Obituary

Celebrating a Life of Love and Faith Madeline Elaine Lumpkin, age 101, went on to be with the Lord on April 3, 2025. Born on September 3, 1923, in Moline, Illinois, to Leander Edgar Olson and Clara Elvira Smidesang, Madeline’s heritage was enriched by her Scandinavian grandparents from Sweden and Norway. A graduate of Moline High School, Madeline married the love of her life, Harold Garren Lumpkin Sr. - her brother’s WWII buddy - on January 3, 1942, in a ceremony held at the historic Cahokia Mounds, Missouri. After World War II, they built a home together centered on love, faith, and strong values. In 1986, Madeline left Moline with Harold and made the Ozarks her home near her daughter’s family, where she embraced the quiet beauty of the region. A dedicated homemaker and caretaker, she gave selflessly to those around her. Her strong faith and commitment to her family were guiding forces in her life. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Forsyth while holding onto her deep roots in her previous life experiences with the congregation of the Elim Swedish Covenant Church in Moline, Illinois. She found happiness in volunteering, singing in the church choir, working outdoors in her garden, bowling, driving her children to and from school and church activities, and most of all, spending time with her family and church friends. Madeline is survived by her son, Harold Garren Lumpkin Jr.; five grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harold; her daughter, Patricia Diane Griffith; her brother, Odin Olson; and her sisters, Regina Pribyl and Geraldine Sunlin. Madeline’s enduring spirit, warm heart, and steadfast faith will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.

Cremation was in the care of Snapp-Bearden Forsyth Chapel, Forsyth, Mo. Burial will be at a later date, Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, IL.
