Joseph Placzek Obituary

Joseph S. Placzek was born May 8, 1935, in Platte County, Nebraska.  Joe entered into rest on December 29, 2023 in Forsyth, Missouri at the age of 88.  A funeral mass will be held Thursday January 4, 2024, at Our Lady of the Ozarks Catholic Church in Forsyth at 10:30 A.M. with burial to follow in Snapp Cemetery, Forsyth.  Deacon Dan will officiate. There will be a visitation beginning at 9:30 A.M. till service time.  Arrangements are under the direction of Snapp-Bearden Forsyth Chapel.

Joe was the youngest of 13 children born to Joseph and Bernice (Kozak) Placzek in rural Platte County.  Joe loved the outdoors and especially fishing with his older brother, Sal.  As young boys growing up in rural Nebraska, fishing and hunting were critical to the family’s food supply.  Joe worked on the family farm near Duncan and later moved to a farm on the Loup River near Krakow, NE.  His parents  purchased a farm west of Fullerton in Nance County.   In 1956, Joe enlisted in the US Army. After he completed his basic training, he returned to the farm near Fullerton where his entire family had gathered for a party to send him off in Placzek style with lots of Polish music provided by family members including Grandpa Joe, brothers Sal and Martin and even Joe picked up the violin and joined in the celebration.  It was a typical Placzek Blow-out.   oe’s military service was in Germany during the period called the “Cold War” when tensions between the United States and Russia were high. After completing his military service, Joe returned to the family farm west of Fullerton where he worked until the farm was sold in the early 60’s.  Joe relocated to Omaha and began working at one of the packing houses.  In 1967, he met Beverly, they hit it off and were married on May 29, 1969 in Omaha. They decided to strike out to Missouri in 1970 to find their fortune.  They were determined to find land for farming.  Well, when they got to the Forsyth area looking for land, they found the Tri-Lakes Rod and Reel Bait Shop on Hwy. 160 for sale and the rest is history for the Forsyth community.  This choice created a lifetime of adventures for both of them.  Besides running the shop which took up most of their time and energy, they found time to enjoy fishing in the evening with a picnic supper or on weekends, attended Flea Markets.  If you were ever in their shop, you couldn’t help but see the treasure trove of items from those trips which were for sale as well as live bait, thousands of lures, reels, rods, and yes, the prize winning fish which Joe caught at the three well-known local lakes.  Finding the bait shop, provided them with many hours of hard work, but great times fishing in the evening or going to Flea Markets on weekends..  In 2012, Beverly passed away leaving Joe to run the shop…and he did.  The shop was open seven days a week and this continued until this fall, when Joe’s health deteriorated.   Joe’s Tri-Lake Bait and Tackle shop was in business for 53 years.  During that time it contributed to the economic growth of Forsyth, provided people from everywhere with the equipment to enjoy fishing  and was recognized several times receiving the Business Recognition Award from the Forsyth City Council.   The latest one was received on November 28, 2023.

Joe is survived by nieces and nephews who reside outside Missouri, as well as his longtime friend, Carolina Carr, who has provided him with support and caring during the past years.  Joe also leaves behind to  mourn him an enormous group of friends, customers, and other acquaintances from across the country. He will be missed.
